'Fire in the Library' is the title of the article written by Matt Schwartz at webpage, www.technologyreview.com/web/39317.
The article highlights the work of a self-appointed Archives Team who come to the rescue of web resources that could easily disappear when the companies who run the sites sell or close down for whatever the reason/reasons.
The article states, 'Scott and the Archives Team do not seek permission before undertaking one of their raids, though as a rule they only go after files that are publicly available and Scott says most companies are not complaining.'
Some of the highlighted rescue missions the Archives Team have undertaken include; resources of Poetry.com (14 million user submitted poems), Geocities (38 million home-made pages) lost when owners Yahoo decided not to host anymore and a Blog-hosting site run by an Italian company.
The details of the Archives Team 'modus operandi' is a process, in my opinion, of some great networking, collaboration (the largely volunteer team use a wiki to collaborate and plan) and techno savvy innovation.
An interesting article, worth reading.
